Happily faring are the Lord’s disciples, [喜悅聖弟子]

correctly faring are the Lord’s disciples, [正道聖弟子]
methodically faring are the Lord’s disciples,[如法聖弟子]
namely the four pairs of individuals, the eight types
of persons. [稱四雙八輩]
These disciples of the Lord are worthy of offering,
hospitality, [供養及呈獻]
gifts and salutation with folded hand, [合掌並敬禮]
they are an incomparable source of goodness in the

THE TWIN
VERSES
1. Mind is the
forerunner of (all evil) states. Mind is chief; mind-made are they.
if one speaks or acts with wicked
mind, because of that, suffering follows one,
even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox.

forerunner of (all good) states. Mind is chief; mind-made are they.
if one speaks or acts with pure mind, because of that,
happiness follows one like one’s own shadow that never leaves.

1. 諸法意先導,意主意造作。
若以染污意,或語或行業,是則苦隨彼,如輪隨獸足。

南傳慈經
其一是Karaõãyamettasuttaü(Khuddakapāñha
9; Suttanipāta 1.8) ,中譯為「應作慈愛經」,內容出自南傳小部《小誦.第9 經》《經集.第1 品.第8 經》,是南傳佛教《護衛經》之一:《慈經》Metta Sutta。
巴利語paritta,音譯為“巴利達”,意為護衛、保護、守護。根據上座部佛教的傳統,有一些經文具有某種不可思議的力量,能夠使念誦者和聽聞者免除危難,帶來吉祥。從祈請念誦護衛經的邀請文中可以知道,護衛經具有能夠排除不幸、達成一切成就,使痛苦、怖畏、疾病等消失的護衛作用。因此,經典的編纂者和持誦者把這一類具有護衛功效的經典編集在一起,統稱為“護衛經”。

Do not do the slightest thing that the wise would

Sukhino
vā khemino hontu
sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
Think: Happy & secure, may all beings be happy
at heart.
這樣想:喜樂、平安,願一切衆生心有喜樂。

tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā,
Whatever beings there may be, weak or strong,

一切衆生,無論軟弱、强大、

Na paro paraṃ

Let no one deceive another or despise anyone

願人們不相互欺騙、不鄙視任何地方的任何人,
Byārosanā paṭīgha-saññā
nāññam-aññassa dukkham-iccheyya.
Or through anger or resistance wish for another to
suffer.
不以怒意、敵意,願他人受苦。
Mātā yathā niyaṃ
puttaṃ
āyusā eka-puttam-anurakkhe,
As a mother would risk her life to protect her
child, her only child,
如一位母親舍命保護親子、獨子,
Evam-pi
sabba-bhūtesu
māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.
Even so should one cultivate a limitless heart with
regard to all beings.
他更應當對一切衆生,長養無量慈心。
Mettañca sabba-lokasmiṃ
māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ,
With good will for the entire cosmos, cultivate a
limitless heart:
以對全宇宙的善意,長養無量之心:
Uddhaṃ
adho ca tiriyañca
asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ.
Above, below, & all around, unobstructed,
without enmity or hate.
自上、自下、周遭,無障礙、無敵意與恨意。
Tiṭṭhañ'caraṃ nisinno
vā
sayāno vā yāvatassa vigatam-iddho,
Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down,
as long as one is alert,
無論站、行、坐、臥,凡清醒時,
Etaṃ
satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya
brahmam-etaṃ vihāraṃ idham-āhu.
One should be resolved on this mindfulness.
This is called a sublime abiding here & now.
他應當確立此念。
這便稱爲即時即地的梵住之心。
Diṭṭhiñca anupagamma
sīlavā dassanena sampanno,
Not taken with views, but virtuous & consummate
in vision,
不受觀念左右,而有戒德與具足見,
Kāmesu
vineyya gedhaṃ,
Na hi jātu gabbha-seyyaṃ punaretīti.
Having subdued desire for sensual pleasures,
One never again will lie in the womb.
斷除了感官貪欲,他不再投胎。

其二是由馬來西亞籍的黃慧音居士(Imee Ooi )作曲演唱,原先是為了撫慰2004年底南海大海嘯傷亡者及其家屬而錄製,後來因為音質柔美與唱誦內容觸及人們深心而廣為流傳。
此曲(Chant of Metta) 或可譯為「慈經誦」,是從巴利文經典中,佛陀對於「慈」(Metta)的開示內容,所加以編寫譜曲而成,文字內容則大致與覺音(Buddhaghosa)所著《清靜道論》第九「梵住品」內容相近。

我曾經讀過這麼一個可愛的故事:
一位基督教傳教士到非洲一個很原始的森林地方傳教,三個當地土著用簡陋的木筏載他渡河,傳教士手口並用教他們祈禱唸誦以作感激回報,到對岸臨離開還再三叮囑土著們常常不要忘記祈禱。三年過去了,那位傳教士重回非洲,再到當地那條河邊,奇怪,怎麼河道水面中央傳來一陣陣祈禱唸誦聲呢?一看卻呆了一陣子,原來那三個土人竟然可以一邊唸誦一邊赤足飛渡水面,毋須再用木筏了。
