《三件事》



數年前友人用電郵寄來雋言,就是如上影片的一則《三件事》,讀後我覺得頗有意義,於是把它影印多份送給禪修班的家長學員們,有家長對我說,把《三件事》的內容應用到日常生活,免卻了不少煩惱,於是他又和家人分享,那當然是一件值得喜悅的事。


假如世間一切事情,就正如上影片文中所講及的: 只有三件事 ,那麼人類真的會減少了許多煩惱。文字和概念所能表達的,與現實中的差異又如何能用文字和言語來完全描述,不過,這裡還是可以簡單的講一下:「老天爺的事」,極其量只可以用祈求或希望的心態去期待,旱地冀甘霖,水災求雨去。「自己的事」和「別人的事」兩邊非黑即白的,當中其實差不多所有事都不是純一的「自己的事」或「別人的事」,十九同涉及「自己」和「別人」,只是傾向某一方多一些。例如前些日子有動新聞報導,地球上某大地有小孩子被車撞倒在路旁,過百路人行經而視若無睹,如果簡單依照上述「別人的事」的態度去處理,那些經過而當作看不見有車傷人的途人,又有什麼問題?我在紐約生活的時候,早已聽聞在當地有不少借別人同情心來討便宜的事,有些簡直是匪夷所思,不過,記得在曼克頓中央車站,我見到一位黑人行動困難,還是不加思索地上前去問他需要扶一把嗎?舉一而三反,大概可以了解為什麼對待「自己」和「別人」的事,在真正行動起來的時候,並不如文字所反映的那麼簡單。


那麼,我提議一個標準去衡量怎樣判別對所有不屬於「老天爺的事」的進退態度,如果預先盤算了,事情經過自己有限能力處理之後,最壞的結果如何,而自己又樂意無怨地去接受,那就一往無悔去做!否則就如絕大多數中國人一樣,秉承 各家自掃 的先輩遺訓好了。同時,不要怪責他人對「別人的事」的冷漠態度。
若世間只有黑和白,則非黑即白;誰知黑白之間,灰階何止千萬,何況還有彩色?

《因緣》


        
         所謂 因緣 二字,簡單來說,主要、內在的因素為因;外來、輔助性的為緣。例如種子發芽長大,種子本身的種類和品質是因,所需要的水、空氣、陽光和適當的土壤為緣,因緣和合,種子便能發芽長成植物;反之。因或緣之缺少或不足,就必礙正常的生長。

        人也是一樣,孩子的體質相貌是先天的因,後天所遇所作的種種為緣。人內心的佈局,有俱生的,也有後天培養出來的,遠古中華的孔孟與荀子,分取人性善惡,概括而論,終不及古印度聖者對心性的深邃哲「遍行,別境善煩惱,隨煩惱不定」,及至傳到華夏演化成《八識規矩頌》的 「善惡臨時別配之」,善或惡隨意所導是也。

        阿位伯有一個古老的寓言故事,在商道小鎮驛站旅館外,一個路過要留宿的商人,在旅勝度宿一宵,並把他的駱駝留在旅館外,第二朝準備起程,但發覺自己的駱駝不見了,其他商人見狀,問他昨夜有沒有繫好駱駝才離開?他說因為相信神會安排,所以並無繫好駱駝!當中一位有智慧的商人告訴他:下次緊記先要繫好你自己的駱駝,然後把牠交給神!
        看掌相睇風水等為什麼時會不準確?因為他們最多只能統計出先天的因,和多數隨波逐水的緣,至於如果有意識覺察的思想及行為,一概是自由意志的抉擇,掌相風水等便完全起不了作用。
        專制暴政為什麼終不能久遠?因為當權者一方面欺壓、殘害及哄騙人民,另方面又存歪心想扭曲控制每一個人後天的緣(思想),世事弔詭,因果道理則千古不易,亦因為後天的緣是人人本有的自由抉擇,所以任憑怎樣專制,暴政終不能久住,亘古如是。

《感恩》


        
         某日,舅母來訪,談到她的女兒及女婿(即我的表妹及表妹夫,她倆都是虔誠的基督徒兼傳道人),每次當舅母煮好晚餐飯餸,餐前表妹及表妹夫(也當然包括她們的一對子女)都例行祈禱多謝上主,舅母懷疑地說:「飯餸是我煮的,他們不多謝我,倒向他們的上帝感恩……」,說來多麼的莫明其所以??

       我的老師父曾說過,在他的家鄉斯里蘭卡,或在東南亞不少比較貧困的地方,人們每餐前都會作感恩禱告,得到一些物資也一樣會感恩,反而在香港那麼物質豐裕的地方,事事感恩似乎變得不尋常。

     感恩發自內心,是一種內在蘊藏的能量,可能投射到某一對象,或許只要把感恩的能量從心內放射十方,直是不必需要任何感恩對象;感恩又並不祈望任何回報,只是純粹的感激!所以,很小部分比較上上聰明的人,會向不是生物或食物的東西也常常感恩。

        在天主教會教學的差不多三十個年頭,天天未上課先唸《馬太福音》第六章九至十三節…… “我們的天父,願你的 當時唸來真有趣,現在回味起上來也十分歡喜。

        懂得事事感恩,應該包括順緣的,當然也包括逆緣的,順利的事教人欣喜,拂逆的更是學習好機遇,如果讀過舊約聖經《約伯記》的內容,是否可以從中得到一點啟發?世人多能在遇到順事美事中感恩,碰上逆境而能真誠感恩的人,必定屬於有多少智慧(智慧與聰明不一樣)之輩。

        不知道感恩這一回事的人,他們的生命,經已是乾涸了的枯井,再沒有什麼意義。懂得常感恩的,不論遇著何人何事,生命都會充滿積極、豁達和希望。

以世間的尺去量度聖人的心?

            當年老師父來港,有一次在九龍鑽石山的志蓮淨院主持禪修講座,有聽眾提問,基督教和佛教有什麼不同的地方?老師父答曰:「我不知道基督教和佛教有什麼不同的地方,但,卻知道他們都有許多相同的好處,令我們可以好好地去學習。」……...........之後,有些人覺得老師父是走遍世界各地講學的人(老江湖),他的答案當然圓滑!?

        如果能夠真誠地撇開對宗教或門派差異的隔閡藩籬,釋開人為創造的梏桎,這種傾向智慧的抉擇,必然會令人對生命的意義,不斷注入開放進步和覺醒的觀念,日常生活每一個情節便成為值得敬拜的寺廟教堂。從別人身上看到自己,每一天的生命,無論順逆,都變成學習的好機緣。

        在這裡,待我每隔一個月用小段文字,把以前從文言或賢輩們中所聽所聞所見的經驗,用顯淺白話深入淺出,嘗試從不同的角度去重新認識生命,與君共享,務求令各位能明白了解,對每刻的生活更有意識和覺察,望大家喜歡。

南傳慈經 
其一是Karaõãyamettasuttaü(Khuddakapāñha 9; Suttanipāta 1.8) ,中譯為「應作慈愛經」,內容出自南傳小部《小誦.第9 經》《經集.第1 品.第8 經》,南傳佛教護衛經之一:《慈經》Metta Sutta
巴利語paritta,音譯為“巴利達”,意為護衛、保護、守護。根據上座部佛教的傳統,有一些經文具有某種不可思議的力量,能夠使念誦者和聽聞者免除危難,帶來吉祥。從祈請念誦護衛經的邀請文中可以知道,護衛經具有能夠排除不幸、達成一切成就,使痛苦、怖畏、疾病等消失的護衛作用。因此,經典的編纂者和持誦者把這一類具有護衛功效的經典編集在一起,統稱為“護衛經”。

這樣想:喜樂、平安,願一切衆生心有喜樂。

一切衆生,無論軟弱、强大、

Long, large, middling, short, subtle, blatant,
長、大、中等、短小、精細、粗顯、

願人們不相互欺騙、不鄙視任何地方的任何人,

Byārosanā paṭīgha-saññā

Or through anger or resistance wish for another to suffer.
不以怒意、敵意,願他人受苦。

Mātā yathā
niyaṃ puttaṃ
āyusā eka-puttam-anurakkhe,

As a mother would risk her life to protect her child, her only child,
如一位母親舍命保護親子、獨子,

Evam-pi sabba
-bhūtesu
māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.

Even so should one cultivate a limitless heart with regard to all beings.
他更應當對一切衆生,長養無量慈心。

Mettañca sabba
-lokasmiṃ
māna-sambhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ,

With good will for the entire cosmos, cultivate a limitless heart:
以對全宇宙的善意,長養無量之心:

Uddhaṃ adho ca
tiriyañca
asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ.

Above, below, & all around, unobstructed, without enmity or hate.
自上、自下、周遭,無障礙、無敵意與恨意。

Tiṭṭhañ'caraṃ
nisinno vā
sayāno vā yāvatassa vigatam-iddho,

Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down,
as long as one is alert,

無論站、行、坐、臥,凡清醒時,

Etaṃ satiṃ
adhiṭṭheyya
brahmam-etaṃ vihāraṃ idham-āhu.

One should be resolved on this mindfulness.
This is called a sublime abiding here & now.

他應當確立此念。
這便稱爲即時即地的梵住之心。

Diṭṭhiñca
anupagamma
sīlavā dassanena sampanno,

Not taken with views, but virtuous & consummate in vision,
不受觀念左右,而有戒德與具足見,

Kāmesu vineyya
gedhaṃ,
Na hi jātu gabbha-seyyaṃ punaretīti.

Having subdued desire for sensual pleasures,
One never again will lie in the womb.

斷除了感官貪欲,他不再投胎。

其二是由馬來西亞籍的黃慧音居士(Imee Ooi )作曲演唱,原先是為了撫慰2004年底南海大海嘯傷亡者及其家屬而錄製,後來因為音質柔美與唱誦內容觸及人們深心而廣為流傳。
此曲(Chant of Metta) 或可譯為「慈經誦」,是從巴利文經典中,佛陀對於「慈」(Metta)的開示內容,所加以編寫譜曲而成,文字內容則大致與覺音(Buddhaghosa)所著《清靜道論》第九「梵住品」內容相近。

我曾經讀過這麼一個可愛的故事:
一位基督教傳教士到非洲一個很原始的森林地方傳教,三個當地土著用簡陋的木筏載他渡河,傳教士手口並用教他們祈禱唸誦以作感激回報,到對岸臨離開還再三叮囑土著們常常不要忘記祈禱。三年過去了,那位傳教士重回非洲,再到當地那條河邊,奇怪,怎麼河道水面中央傳來一陣陣祈禱唸誦聲呢?一看卻呆了一陣子,原來那三個土人竟然可以一邊唸誦一邊赤足飛渡水面,毋須再用木筏了。
